There are a few things that we have been anxiously waiting for over the last year to signify that the hemp industry is entering the mainstream. Crop insurance, which has finally become available (see our 4/19 update) and the slow but steady addition of banking institutions willing to engage in basic financial services are two examples.
We have also been calling for the UW to more directly and officially engage in the success of this industry. There is good news on that front. UW’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and UW Extension leaders have partnered to fund a one-year research and outreach project to support industrial hemp growers. The project will be led by Rodrigo Werle, a UW–Madison assistant professor of agronomy and an Extension specialist.
This is yet another example of the progress that is being made in this industry.
